Tibet Travel Guide for Foreigners

Tibet, known as the "Roof of the World", is one of the most unique and breathtaking travel destinations on Earth. For foreign nationals and compatriots from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, traveling to Tibet requires certain procedures and documents. This guide covers everything you need to know — from Tibet Travel Permits to recommended itineraries, altitude preparation, and cultural tips.

1. Required Documents

For Foreign Nationals:

1. Valid Passport (with at least 6 months validity)
2. Chinese Visa (L-class tourist visa recommended)
3. Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) — Issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, processed through a licensed travel agency. Processing time: 15–30 days.
4. Alien's Travel Permit — Required for border areas (Everest Base Camp, Mt. Kailash, etc.)
5. Military Permit — Required for Ngari Prefecture (Mt. Kailash, Guge Kingdom, etc.)

For Hong Kong, Macau & Taiwan Compatriots:

• HK/Macau: Home Return Permit (回乡证)
• Taiwan: Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (台胞证)
• Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) — Also required. Processing time: 15–20 working days.

2. Important Rules

• Foreigners and HK/Macau/Taiwan travelers must travel in organized groups with a licensed travel agency.
• Independent travel is NOT permitted for non-Chinese citizens.
• The travel agency must provide a licensed guide and designated vehicle for the entire trip.
• You must follow the itinerary arranged by the travel agency. Unauthorized route changes are not allowed.
• Some areas (especially military-sensitive zones) are restricted or closed to foreigners.

4. Tibet Travel Permit Application Process

1. Contact us at least 30 days before your planned trip.
2. Provide the following documents:
   • Clear copy of passport photo page
   • Copy of Chinese visa
   • Detailed travel itinerary (arranged by us)
3. We submit the application to the Tibet Tourism Bureau on your behalf.
4. The TTP is issued within 15–30 days.
5. You receive the TTP before departure and must carry it throughout your Tibet trip.

5. Tips for Foreign Travelers

• Altitude Sickness: Lhasa sits at 3,650m. Take it easy on day one, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activity. Oxygen bottles and first-aid kits are available.
• Weather: Strong UV and large temperature swings. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, warm layers, and a hat.
• Currency: Chinese Yuan (RMB). Major credit cards work in big hotels; cash is needed for smaller shops and entrance fees. ATMs are available in Lhasa.
• Connectivity: Most international sites (Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) are blocked in China. Install a VPN before arriving. WeChat is widely used.
• Photography: Not allowed inside temples or military areas. Always ask permission before photographing locals.
• Respect Local Culture: Walk clockwise around temples and stupas. Dress modestly at monasteries. Don't point at Buddha statues or sacred mountains.
